God Is the Beyond

Otto Rank, a psychological genius and, in my opinion, a spiritual genius as well, recognized that “the individual is not just striving for survival but is reaching for some kind of ‘beyond.’” He says “we negotiate with the problem of the Beyond” when we approach art and love. We taste these “Beyond” experiences in love and truth and art and they serve to dissolve our individuality and connect us to a “greater whole.” This greater whole is the “unio mystica,” the mystical union, where we experience a “potential restoration of a union with the Cosmos, which once existed and was then lost.”

To speak of the “Beyond” is to speak of something that is not yet reached, something that beckons us, reaches out to us. The word in English comes from being yonder, being someplace we are not yet, at a frontier, an edge, an adventure, a horizon. We are invited to render the Beyond present, to bring the future into the Now. Is God and a promised Kingdom of God of peace and justice (see #80) such an horizon, a kind of goal, a distant one we long for and strive to create? The theological word for the beyond is eschaton.
